Roald Amundsen made it look too easy. And that’s boring.

Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian who actually made it to the South Pole first, made the fatal mistake of not dying in the process.

Scott and Shackleton made for much more interesting reading by being heroic failures in an epic way.

Scott actually brought Shetland ponies to the Antarctic at one point. How smart does that sound?

Shackleton, who was Irish, brought along cases of whiskey for the jaunt.

And then along comes ole Roald Amundsen who simply used sled dogs.

Like they did in the Arctic.

He did the obviously smart thing.

Amundsen’s problem was he made it look too easy.
