YAKKETY SAX IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A BRILLIANT IDEA

I remember 14 years ago having this idea for Bud Light, which i worked on back then btw.

A guy walks into a convenience store and gets a six pack of Bud Light.

He leaves the store.

We see someone suddenly appear to walk right behind him.

And then somebody else. And more and more people.

And he looks behind himself and realizes they all want his bud light and the yakkety sax music kicks in and the whole thing speeds up into a Benny Hill ending. The mob runs through a ladies’ sporting changing room. Old bald men get slapped on the head etc. As they chase the Bud Light guy all around.

To me this was as good as it was gonna get. I felt it was perfect for the rather juvenile tone of the brand.

But no.

People at the agency felt Benny Hill was too downmarket for Bud Light.

Exsqueeze me! It’s Bud fucking Light. It’s perfect.

I couldn’t believe it.

It’s still perfect.

But you move on, don’t you.

  1. It is perfect, and that’s a great clip, but the Russian ‘chick’ at the end was an official nottahot.

  2. I was never fortunate to work on such an account, but I had an idea, also for Bud, in which men are shown outdoors, in the summer, sweating, painting, doing yard chores, being miserable and hot. A distant ice cream truck jingle is heard and their heads turn. They stop and run like children through the suburban streets, (Think Tom Hanks in “Big”) and the final reveal is they are chasing a Bud truck. Why it was playing an ice cream truck jingle I never worked out. but I had this idea when I was about 14.

    • Great idea Keith. So great that Heineken did it in the UK in the early 90s I think. Lowe Howard Spink i believe.

  3. too wonderful
